PFAS in Arizona Drinking Water: What Homeowners Need to Know in 2026
Arizona doesn't get talked about in national PFAS coverage the way Michigan or North Carolina does — but the contamination here is real, growing, and well-documented. Tucson has been forced to take wells offline. ADEQ is running statewide testing. And the cleanup is going to take years.
If you live anywhere in Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, or Yavapai counties, here's what you actually need to know.
How Bad Is It?
According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), about 6% of tested water sources in Arizona have PFAS at or above EPA health advisory levels. That sounds low until you remember that "6%" includes a lot of densely populated municipal systems.
The state has identified PFAS contamination in:
- Tucson — multiple municipal wells closed since 2022 due to AFFF firefighting foam contamination from Davis-Monthan AFB and Tucson International Airport. Tucson Water has opened a new advanced treatment facility specifically to handle PFAS, but additional wells continue to test high.
- Phoenix metro — detections in groundwater near Luke AFB and several industrial corridors.
- Prescott — periodic monitoring; some wells showing detections.
- Tempe and Scottsdale — utility testing has flagged levels that, while below older advisory thresholds, exceed the new 4 ppt EPA standard.
The contamination pattern in Arizona almost always traces back to one of three sources: military bases, airports, or legacy industrial sites.
What's Being Done About It
Two things are happening in parallel:
1. State-Level Testing
ADEQ runs a comprehensive PFAS testing program for public drinking water systems. They sample smaller systems at no charge and publish results on the agency's PFAS dashboard. If you're on a municipal supply, your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is required to disclose PFAS detections.
2. The PFAS Settlement
Arizona participates in the national PFAS settlements with 3M, DuPont, and other manufacturers. Phase 2 funds treatment infrastructure for Arizona public water systems — but does nothing for private wells.
If You're on a Private Well
Here's the part most Arizona homeowners don't realize: ADEQ does not regulate private wells. If you draw water from a private well, you are responsible for testing and treatment.
That's a meaningful number of people. Arizona has roughly 80,000+ private wells, concentrated in:
- Rural Maricopa County (Buckeye, Wittmann, San Tan Valley)
- Cochise County
- Mohave County (Lake Havasu fringe, Kingman)
- Northern Arizona (Williams, Flagstaff fringe)
- Verde Valley
If your well is within a few miles of a military base, airport, fire training facility, or older industrial corridor, assume PFAS exposure until you've tested.
How to Test Your Water in Arizona
Two paths:
Municipal supply
- Find your utility's most recent CCR (mailed annually, also online).
- Look under "unregulated contaminants" or "PFAS." If results aren't listed, call and request the most recent UCMR5 data.
- If you want independent verification, you can submit a tap sample to a certified lab (EPA Method 537.1 or 533).
Private well
- Order a PFAS test kit from a certified lab. Cost typically runs $300–$600 depending on how many PFAS analytes are screened.
- Follow the sampling instructions exactly — PFAS can leach from common collection materials (PTFE-coated bottles, certain plastics). Use the lab-provided container.
- Results take 2–3 weeks.
The major labs that handle Arizona samples include Eurofins, Pace Analytical, and Babcock Laboratories.
How to Read Your Results
Concentrations are reported in parts per trillion (ppt) — also written as ng/L.

Treatment Options for Arizona Homes
Three technologies are proven against PFAS:
- Reverse osmosis (under-sink) — best for drinking and cooking water. 95%+ PFAS reduction. Best when paired with a remineralization stage.
- Anion exchange resin (whole-house or point-of-use) — high capacity, especially effective against short-chain PFAS. Works alongside carbon prefilters.
- Granular activated carbon (whole-house) — affordable, effective on long-chain PFAS, weaker on short-chain. Often used as a prefilter stage.
For most Phoenix-area homes pulling municipal water, an under-sink RO at the kitchen sink is the highest-impact, lowest-cost step. If you're on a well or you want full-home protection, a whole-house GAC + anion exchange combination is the gold standard.
Why Phoenix-Area Water Chemistry Matters
Arizona water tends to be hard and high in TDS. Two implications: hardness destroys RO membranes (most AZ homes need a softener or scale-inhibiting prefilter upstream), and high sulfate/nitrate reduces standard ion exchange capacity. If you're buying a resin-based system in Arizona, make sure it's PFAS-selective, not generic SBA.
What To Do This Month
- Pull your last CCR or check ADEQ's PFAS dashboard. Five minutes.
- If you're on a well, order a PFAS test kit. Don't assume.
- Match the filter to the chemistry. Hard Arizona water needs a different stack than a Michigan home with soft water.
The Bottom Line
Arizona has real PFAS problems, mostly tied to military and airport firefighting foam, and ADEQ's testing has only scratched the surface. Municipal systems are getting cleanup funding, but private wells are on their own.
